Black Children Hospitalized More Often For Ruptured Appendix

Black children were one-third more likely than white children to be hospitalized for a ruptured appendix in 2006, according to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. If not treated quickly, a ruptured appendix can cause life threatening complications. Ruptures may result when the warning signs of appendicitis are missed, leading to a delay in surgery to remove the infected appendix. New Report Shows Major Diseases Being Addressed With Over 230 Medicines In Development For Children

Inequities Exists In Disease Burden, Health Care And Access For Minority Children

Minority children in the U.S. face a pervasive gap in the quality and extent of health care received compared to Caucasians, according to a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics written by a UT Southwestern Medical Center physician. The country’s 31.4 million minority children face higher overall death rates than Caucasians, and certain groups face greater violence and higher incidence of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, asthma, ADHD and certain types of cancers, according to the report…
